SWIG Hip Flask Review

Swig Case Open

Ah, the hip flask.  Perfect for outings in which you bring your own whiskey.  Years ago, my wife (then-girlfriend) Carly gifted me an engraved flask.  It was a very thoughtful gift I’ve used a handful of times.  Some folks I know swear by their hip flasks.  Whether it is sneaking a bit of whiskey into a football stadium, concert or parade, hip flasks do serve their purpose.  Especially nowadays, when whiskey’s popularity is booming.

As you mindful readers know, the majority of reviews on this website are whiskey reviews.  Now and then, I get the chance to look at whiskey-related items.  Enter SWIG Hip Flasks.  The recent upstart company asked if I’d be interested in checking out one of their flasks, and soon shipped one over.  Based in England, SWIG was founded in 2013 by David Galbraith.  David developed a luxury flask that is as equally stylish as it is useful.

Yes, flasks are flasks.  What makes SWIG unique is their design.  As it’s made from one piece of stainless steel, their flasks are seamless.  That means they won’t leak.  Ever.  The flask holds 170mL, or 6 ounces of your favorite distilled liquid.  The cap is a screw top.  Note, a pour funnel is sold separately.

Another unique feature is SWIG’s pouch collection, allowing you to add a bit of personality to your flask.  They include tweed (made in Scotland) and various leather pouches.  I was sent the blue executive leather pouch.  It has a magnetic flap and a card slot inside, in case you want to hide some cash or a credit card.  The entire thing ships in a beautiful looking gift box.  One more thing.  Each flask is individually numbered, and comes with an invitation to join the SWIG Society, an online membership that gives you access to giveaways and other cool things.

Make no mistake, this is one beautiful flask.  The seamless flask and leather work on the pouch is top notch.  David and his company kept a meticulous eye in terms of design, and should be commended.  Based on design and presentation alone, I would highly recommend this flask.

My only reservation is the price.  My review flask with pouch costs £104, which is about $160 USD.  That’s a lot of money for a flask and leather pouch.  I know, I know – this is a luxury item.  It’s marketed and priced that way.  If you’re just in need of a cheap flask, a SWIG flask is not what you’re looking for.  However, those looking for something a bit more upscale, a SWIG flask might be right up your alley.  I think it would make for a great gift for a special occasion, such as a birthday or anniversary.  Trust me, the gift recipient will love their SWIG flask.

(Thanks to SWIG Flasks for the review flask.)
